Genetic Counseling for Adults

We see adults in our genetics center for many of the same reasons as our pediatric patients. Additionally, there are genetic conditions that do not present until later in life.

Adult onset genetic conditions include:

  • Cardiac diseases of the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure
  • Cardiac conditions that affect heart rhythm
  • Neurodegenerative conditions such as Huntington Disease, DRPLA, early onset Alzheimers, and early onset ALS
  • Connective tissue conditions such as Ehlers Danlos syndrome and Marfan syndrome
  • Muscular Dystrophies
  • Metabolic conditions due to the body being unable to effectively break down certain compounds
  • Thrombophilias that significantly increase the risk to develop blood clots

Genetic evaluation and counseling also helps you:

  • Identify family members at risk
  • Explore medical management options
  • Take preventative measures

Sometimes a genetic evaluation and counseling helps facilitate lifestyle changes or offers the opportunity to participate in targeted clinical trials/research.

Preparing for your visit
Gathering a detailed personal and family history is critical for your first visit. This should include your family members and the ages they had symptoms.

What to expect during your visit
We will discuss the condition you were referred for, tell you about available testing options, and explain how the condition may be inherited. You will learn about medical implications and specialists you may need to see. Depending on the reason you are here, a geneticist may conduct a physical or neurological exam.
