"One of the best ways to accelerate the pace at which good healthy policies happen - such as protecting all workers from secondhand smoke - is by recognizing and sharing the success stories that make them possible."

Mission Awarded for Focus on Employee Health
Mission Hospital has received honors from North Carolina Prevention Partners as a community leader that stands out in several issues of better health. The award was presented at the 11th Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony in Chapel Hill.
Mission was honored for innovative efforts to improve the health of its staff including healthy food programs which include healthy cafeteria choices under the Lighten Up 4 Life program and the weekly farmer's market, tobacco cessation policies and support, and physical activity policies.
One example: Every Thursday, Mission employees have access to their own local farmer's market right on campus at the Heart Tower. "We work with local farmers who bring in fresh picked produce that is in season, says Howard Masonheimer, Director of Food and Nutrition. "We don't charge farmers for the space and our employees can buy it at a very reasonable price, so it's a win-win for everyone. Our staff loves it and the farmers are part of our community. I can't think of a better way to give back. "
"Mission Hospital is a clear leader in putting prevention first for their staff, patients and community," said Dr. Genie Komives, a member of the NC Prevention Partner board of directors. "They describe themselves as feeling called to care for our neighbors, supporting them to live healthy, active lives and helping them heal in times of injury and illness.
"While it remains too easy to be unhealthy in N.C., there are many individuals and organizations that work every day to improve our health," said Dr. Meg Molloy, President and CEO of NC Prevention Partners. "One of the best ways to accelerate the pace at which good healthy policies happen - such as protecting all workers from secondhand smoke - is by recognizing and sharing the success stories that make them possible."
