Hospital Drive/Victoria Road Project:
Opening new pathways for campus expansion

A road construction project on Victoria Road will change the landscape of the Memorial campus and prepare for construction of a new outpatient Cancer Center.

The biggest change will be that (what is currently) Victoria road will be widened and extended all the way to McDowell, providing a new connector road from it directly to Biltmore Avenue.

The new connector road leading to McDowell Street will be called Hospital Drive. Victoria Road starting at the Mission Hospital campus will keep its name and current configuration. The project also includes new landscaping and signage. In order to make the connection to McDowell Street, some areas of the site will be lowered in elevation by as much as 30 feet.

Congressman Health Shuler is assisting Mission in an effort to secure federal funding to help cover part of the costs of this major construction project, which will benefit both Asheville and Buncombe County by improving access and traffic flow around the hospital campuses.  Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2009 and is expected to last fourteen months, through spring of 2011.

Construction Details:

  • Victoria Road and all entrances to the Memorial Campus will remain open throughout construction.
  • The road section from Biltmore Avenue to the main entrance will be completed in phases to reduce inconvenience to the many drivers who use Victoria Road every day.
  • Hamilton Street will be closed between Victoria Road and Brooklet Street.
  • Access to the 445 Biltmore Avenue Parking Deck will still be available via Biltmore Avenue and Victoria Road, and via a temporary connection to Brooklet Street.
  • After construction, Hamilton Street will again be open.

About the project:

  • The design has been a cooperative effort with the City of Asheville and the NC DOT.
  • The project is budgeted to cost $14,405,000.
  • In addition, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has approved $1,000,000 of funding for the project.

"Mission's Memorial Campus is on steep terrain relative to the main traffic arteries, Biltmore Avenue and McDowell Street.    Creating strong access to the campus from McDowell, in addition to the current access from Biltmore, will allow for strong community and emergency access as Mission continues to grow both in volume and in facilities.   Given the continued strong growth of A-B Tech, along with the presence of Asheville High School along Victoria Road, this investment in Hospital Drive provides traffic access to allow future growth on the campus."
