Personalized Medicine
What if your physician knew the best drug at the best dosage to treat your specific medical condition? That's one of the underlying goals of personalized medicine - a new field that depends heavily on genetic testing. This new field of study may determine drug effectiveness and decrease costs by avoiding treatments that have no benefit.
Personalized medicine has the possibility to:
- Target exact medicines and dosages more safely
- Predict a person's risk for disease
- Help prevent disease on a person-specific basis
- Help slow disease progression
Personalized medicine will impact many medical treatments in the future. For example, this field of study may help determine genetic risk factors for blood clotting, an important fact prior to prescribing medications that increase risks for blood clots. In the future, genetic studies may predict the likelihood of developing certain conditions such as cancer or diabetes so risk-reducing medical management can begin before the diseases get started.
We are following this new area of study and considering how to incorporate it into our Center. Learn more about personalized medicine.
