Promote Safe Lifting!

The cost in claims and productivity due to back injuries at work is in the billions of dollars. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than one million workers suffer back injuries each year, and back injuries account for one of every five workplace injuries or illnesses.

Estimates suggest that during any given year 50% of workers will experience lower back pain. Often these episodes will resolve on their own, but 60-85% of sufferers will have a recurrence within the first year. Here are some tips for safe lifting to share with employees:

  1. Maintain good posture with a slight curve in the low back.

  2. A pillow or towel roll just above the belt line can help when sitting.

  3. When lifting or bending keep your back straight and bend from your hips and knees.

  4. Make sure you know the weight and balance of the load you are lifting and get help
    if you need to.

  5. Keep active and exercise regularly.

  6. Maintain flexibility and strength, particularly of the abdominal and back muscles.

  7. If you are injured, rest and ice can be helpful for 48 hours, then try to gradually resume
    normal activities.

"Back problems are usually the result of lots of little things over time rather than a one- time injury event," says Mike Heilig, physical therapist and orthopedic clinical specialist. "Incorporating these small changes can make a big difference in the likelihood of injury."
