Birth & Parenting Education

We are delighted that you are considering Mission Hospital for your upcoming birth. Our program goal is to ensure that parents have a timely, organized, enjoyable learning experience. We hope each parent becomes confident and secure as they approach their birth experience.

Registration Information
Registration is required for Mission classes and hospital tours. Classes fill up quickly, so sign up early in your pregnancy. To register, call toll-free 877-213-1221 or 828-213-2222, option 2.

After you have registered, you will receive mailed confirmation and instructions for your classes. Mission is committed to keeping classes affordable. Discounts are applied when you sign up for courses in a series.

 


Basic education classes for first time parents

(Registration for classes at Mission Outpatient Care Center - Clyde begins May 10th!)

First-time parents, this course has all you need to prepare for your new baby! The Basics program strives to ensure that you have a timely, organized, enjoyable experience. Your time with other expectant parents will support you in exploring your choices for birth and parenting.

The Basics: Part I (Taken between 20-28 weeks of pregnancy.*)
Course Topics:

  • Complete guide to a safe and healthy pregnancy
  • Newborns and their care
  • Family changes and preparations
  • Family safety and infant CPR
  • Feeding your infant

Course Details:Four 2 ½ hour classes offered weekends and weeknights in 3 locations
Cost: $45

The Basics: Part II (Taken between 30-38 weeks of pregnancy.)
Course Topics:

  • Choices for labor and birth
  • Comfort methods; relaxation, breathing and positioning
  • Hospital tour of nursing units
  • Medical procedures, medications for pain, cesarean birth

Course Details:Four 2 ½ hour classes offered weekends and weeknights in 3 locations
Cost: $55

*When you take Part I before 28 weeks in your pregnancy, you have time to take a 4-5 week break before you start Part II.

Understanding Birth eClass

InJoy eClass Preview: Understanding Birth

For families whose schedules are too hectic to find time to attend childbirth classes, this award-winning program is:

  • Easy to navigate
  • Self paced for all learners
  • Full of engaging activities, animations, videos,etc.

Course topics include:

Pregnancy, Labor, Birth Stories, Comfort Techniques, Medical Procedures, Cesarean Birth, Newborn Care and Postpartum Care and Adjustments

Also included:

Recommendations:

  • Schedule a tour of Mission
  • Plan on completing the program within 60 days of your first log-in

Cost: $ 65

The Basics: Weekend Intensive Classes
A condensed version of The Basics for families who have challenging life schedules.
Part I (Healthy Pregnancy, Parenting, Newborns and Safety/CPR)
Saturday and Sunday, 1-6 pm (taken between 20-28 weeks)

Cost: $55

Part II (Labor, Birth and Infant Nutrition)
Saturday and Sunday, 1-6 pm (taken between 28-36 weeks)

Cost: $55

Refresher Childbirth Preparation
Designed for those who have already completed a childbirth series and are having another child. Included is a review of the birth process, comfort methods, pain management, medical procedures and recovery. This one-time, 3-hour class is offered once each month. A hospital tour is included.

Cost: $40

Hospital Tour
This tour is for the pregnant mother, dad or support person and will include areas that will care for mother and baby. It is designed for those who do not attend a Mission class. We ask that children not attend the tour with you.

Cost: FREE

Prenatal Yoga
Practicing yoga during pregnancy encourages relaxation, flexibility, and strength in a gentle and non-strenuous way. It helps women learn to trust their bodies and helps them relax into the experience of childbirth. Each class will include breath work, body awareness, postures, guided imagery and meditation. The class specializes in gentle, therapeutic and restorative yoga. (Written approval from the woman's health provider is required to participate in this class).

Classes on Tuesday and Thursday.

Working Moms and Breastfeeding
This 2-hour class covers breastfeeding during the first year, pumping and storing milk and weaning. Mothers would benefit from taking this class before or after their birth.

Cost: $20


Newborn education classes

For families not enrolled in The Basics or Weekend Intensive Classes.

Safe Babies
Everyone involved in caring for your baby should plan to attend this 2 ½ hour class based on the American Heart Association general child safety recommendations and CPR/rescue breathing is included.

Cost: $30/couple and $10/each additional person

Breastfeeding
This 2-hour class helps prepare you for breastfeeding. Included is information about benefits, techniques, resources and support.
Dad or a support person is encouraged to attend. This one-time class is offered at Mission Hospital and at our South Asheville location at the Reuter Family YMCA (Biltmore Park).

Cost: $20


Education classes for parents expecting multiples

Your pregnancy and parenting journey is very unique. You may not have as much time to take classes because of your risk for preterm labor/need for bed rest. We have created a fast-track just for you!

Marvelous Multiples: Part I*
One 5-hour class offered on Saturday afternoons, taken between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy.
Course Topics:

  • Guide to a safe/healthy multiple pregnancy
  • Newborns and their care
  • Safety with Multiples & Infant CPR

Marvelous Multiples: Part II*
One 5-hour class offered on Saturday afternoons, taken between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy.
Course Topics:

  • Family Changes & Preparations for multiples
  • Breastfeeding Multiples
  • Labor & Birth Options/Preparation-Specific to Multiples
  • Tour of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

*Take Part I & Part II in the same month.
Cost for Part I and Part II: $55

Labor And Birth Preparation
Also choose your birth preparation course from one of the following options between 20-30 weeks of pregnancy.
  • The Basics: Part II - $55
  • Weekend Intensive Childbirth: Part II - $55
  • Cesarean Birth - $40

Parenting education classes for both parents and children

Mommy & Me
This outing is for new moms and babies, up to one year of age.
Interesting topics are discussed, occasional guest speakers, and mom/baby exercise. Come join the fun and meet other new mothers.

Locations: Reuter Family YMCA (Biltmore Park), in Mission's Wellness Resource Center, on Mondays.

Cost: $25/6 weeks

Sibling Class
"My Mom's Having a Baby" is designed for children ages 3-8. Children learn about having a new baby in their home. This 45-minute class is offered twice each month on Monday afternoons. A hospital tour is included. To register, call The Health Adventure at 828-254-6373.

Cost: FREE (Community Service provided by The Health Adventure)

Older Sibling Class
This 1 1/2 hour class is designed for children ages 8 and older. Newborn care, safety, helping mom and other interesting topics are discussed. A hospital tour is included.

Cost: $10
