About MAMA

Mission Hospital owns and operates two aircraft in its Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA) fleet, an American Eurocopter EC-135 P1 and an American Eurocopter BK-117 B1.  MAMA has been serving the Western North Carolina area with a stellar safety record since 1986.  It is the only air-medical transport system in Western North Carolina that accommodates newborns as well as children and adults.   In fact, MAMA experienced a first in-flight delivery of twins in July, 1990.

MAMA is also the first civilian EMS helicopter service in the United States to use night-vision goggles in its flights, enabling us to fly rapidly to pick-up sites even in the dark.

Mission Hospital is dedicated to community outreach and education.  Our MAMA team shares information on transport activities such as proper patient preparation, packaging and landing zone safety with emergency room and fire department paramedics, participates in high school, community college and university career day events, and visits elementary schools to communicate our passion for providing the best quality care to families facing emergencies.

Contact us if you would like more information on any of these services or have images or video you would like to share with the MAMA team.
