Charles F. Ayscue

For 20 years, Ayscue was chief financial officer at University of North Carolina Health Care System in Chapel Hill and its predecessors, University of North Carolina Hospitals and the North Carolina Memorial Hospital. In addition, he served as comptroller and associate director of financial services for the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

As CFO of UNC Health Care System, Ayscue developed a combined operating expense budget of more than $1.4 billion for the 1,096-bed system. He led the University of North Carolina Hospitals in achieving an "enterprise fund" status, improving the overall cash balance by $500 million over a 15 year period. Ayscue has been involved with legislation in hospital personnel management, purchasing, property acquisition and property construction. He also played a large role in implementing a long-range plan to achieve operational and financial stabilization for a critical-access designated rural hospital.

Ayscue has been active in numerous community roles in Chapel Hill. He serves on the local Wachovia Bank advisory board and the boards of Shared Services Healthcare Inc., a group purchasing organization, and Medial Air Inc., the AHEC air service. He is a volunteer fund raiser for juvenile diabetes, the Carolina Kids Classic to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill, and the Rex Open for breast and prostate cancer awareness and detection. He is Corporate Sponsorship Committee Chair for the American Heart Association's 2007 Triangle Heart Gala.

Ayscue holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Campbell College, now Campbell University, in Buies Creek, North Carolina. He has published numerous journal articles on computer applications in medical care.

Charles Ayscue brings to Mission and the community a number of personal and professional strengths. He combines the fresh perspective of an outsider with an unmatched knowledge of North Carolina, its systems and its leaders. He has a strong track record in developing new revenue streams for hospitals, in addition to containing costs. He has a personal passion for cultivating future leadership among his staff members. We are fortunate to have been able to recruit him.
Ayscue's wife, Lanier H. Ayscue, MD, is a board certified pathologist and family medicine physician. They have two adult sons.
