Fall Prevention Program

Fall Prevention Program

As we grow older our bodies change as part of the normal aging process.  These changes, along with decreased physical activity, can contribute to an increased risk for falling.  Each year about 30 percent of people over 65 fall at least once. Falls are so common in this age group they are one of the leading causes of injury and death in the over 65 population, resulting in far-reaching effects that impact every part of a person's life.

Through a physical therapy evaluation, we identify and address risk factors to reduce falls and fall-related injuries.
Activity is the number one intervention that has been shown to consistently reduce falls. Our physical therapists will customize an exercise program unique to your needs to maximize safety and function.

First, ask yourself a few questions:

  • Have you or someone you know fallen in the past 12 months?
  • Do you sometimes lose your balance but are able to catch yourself?
  • Have you changed your normal routine because you are concerned about your balance?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above there is probably a need for further assessment. Talk to your physician about a referral to the Mission Hospital Fall Prevention Program or contact us directly, you could be at risk for falling.

What causes a higher risk for falling?
Multiple factors contribute to falls and prevention is more effective when all of these factors are addressed. Risk factors can be categorized into two broad classes:

Intrinsic Factors Extrensic Factors
  • Have issues with balance and equilibrium
  • Have muscle weakness especially in your legs
  • Have walking abnormalities
  • Have visual impairment
  • Have a chronic disorder such as:
    • Neurological disease
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Circulatory disease
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
    • Depression
    • Arthritis
  • Poor lighting
  • Slippery floor surfaces
  • Stairs
  • Objects in your path

Fall Risk Prevention Program
Once a referral is made we evaluate your overall risk for a fall by considering:
  • Your age and history of falling as well as your medical history
  • Your range of motion, flexibility and strength
  • Your balance and vision
  • Your environmental risks
  • Your special interests
  • Any perceived fear of falling that limits your activities
  • Pressing concerns by you or your caregiver

Our Services
In addition to the evaluation components above, we also use validated tools to help us assess your balance and risk of falling including:
  • Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) - a screening tool for identifying older people at increased risk of falling. It measures the time it takes to rise from a chair, walk three minutes, return and sit down.
  • Berg Balance Scale - a 14-item scale designed to measure balance and prediction of multiple falls.
  • Dynamic Gait Index - assesses the ability to modify gait as different tasks demand.
  • Tests that focus on range of motion, muscle strength and sensory integrity.
  • Evidence-based intervention to minimize fall risk including exercise programs that concentrate on strengthening core and leg muscles, improving posture and retraining balance.
  • Safety handouts and answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
  • Problem-solving techniques individualized to each person's situation including how to maximize safety in the home and community.
  • Re-evaluation as needed especially when chronic disease is involved.
