Hip Surgery

Hip pain can change your life-it may make walking, getting up and down, and even lying down difficult. When you feel pain, everything else is difficult. When medications and aids are no longer effective, you may want to consult your physician about hip surgery.

Mission Hospital's Orthopedic Program includes many experienced orthopedic surgeons that perform hundreds of hip surgeries each year. These procedures are done in minimally invasive ways when possible, which translates into less pain after surgery and faster recovery. We monitor care for our patients to help ensure that patients receive quality and that complications are reduced.

The Mission Hospital Orthopedic Program includes several options for hip surgery:

  • Hip replacement surgery includes removing the hip and replacing it with a new joint. Our physicians offer three different techniques for this surgery.
  • Hip resurfacing surgery preserves a portion of the hip ball by smoothing and capping the ball with a metal implant.

What to expect when you have hip surgery
After discussions with your surgeon and anesthesiologist, you will undergo the procedure that best fits your situation. Most patients' hospital stay will range from 1-3 days. Preliminary physical therapy begins in the hospital; you should be able to get in and out of bed, walk short distances, and feel comfortable going up and down stairs before you leave. Physical therapy is continued at home, in an outpatient setting, or in an outpatient rehab facility. You can typically resume normal activities within six weeks.
