Welcome to Mission Children’s Learning Garden!
Where Seeds Grow and Minds Flourish
The learning garden project began with a dynamic group of parent volunteers who decided to bring the Chefs Move to Schools program to Estes Elementary. The PTA reached out to local restaurant owner Steve Frabitore of Tupelo Honey Café and Steve readily agreed to help, bringing Executive Chef Brian Sonoskus to work with Estes.
Over the past school year, Chef Brian has worked with every grade in this 800-student elementary school in South Asheville, teaching students about vegetables and their origins, as well as making healthy snacks for them to enjoy.
Motivated believers in the power of combining education and nutrition, Mr. Frabitore and the PTA started working on how to take this concept further. From their efforts, the idea for an interactive outdoor learning garden on the grounds of the school was born.
A team quickly formed to win sponsors and make the garden a reality. Today, thanks to the hard work of the Estes PTA, the advisory committee and Mission Children’s Hospital, the Estes Elementary learning garden is blooming.
