The Asheville Project
The Asheville Project was the recipient of the American Pharmacists Association's 2002 Pinnacle Award for excellence in patient care and has generated several peer review publications.
Pharmacists are matched up with employees who have chronic medical conditions like diabetes, asthma, hypertension, hyperlipemia, and they follow them in one-on-one counseling relationships long-term.
Employees have an incentive to participate in the program by receiving significantly reduced medication co-payments if they regularly meet with their assigned pharmacist.
This simple approach is helping over 1,000 people in our community to live healthier more productive lives and this model has been replicated in at least seven other states.
We have been able to demonstrate that our pharmacists are saving the health plan significant amounts of money by getting people on the right medications, and making sure they are taking them the way they should. If you have an interest in helping people stay out of the hospital, as well as helping them once they are here, this may be the place for you.
