Susan Mims MD

Susan Mims, MPH, MD, is Executive Medical Director of Mission Children's Hospital.Susan Mims, MPH, MD, is Executive Medical Director of Mission Children's Hospital.

Dr. Mims leads Mission Children’s Hospital in its charge to meet the healthcare needs of children in western NC and promote children’s health throughout the region. Her responsibilities include strategic planning, program development, and clinical quality initiatives in an effort to ensure the hospital maintains the highest standards for pediatric safety, outcomes, and service.

Before joining MCH, Dr. Mims served as Medical Director at the Buncombe County Health Department where she led many quality improvement projects, including integrating behavioral health care into the primary care clinic and converting the Health Center paper records to an electronic medical record system. She also participated in several major disease outbreak investigations, which required collaboration with the State Health Department and the CDC.

Prior to her work as medical director at BCHD, Dr. Mims worked as a physician in a private practice, and as a clinic physician in the health department. She also taught at the UNC School of Medicine as an Adjunct Assistant Professor.

Dr. Mims attended college at the University of Georgia on an athletic scholarship as a diver on the swim team. After a project working with migrant farm workers sparked an interest in epidemiology, she went on to earn a Master of Public Health degree from UNC while completing her MD degree. Dr. Mims continued her medical training at UNC Hospitals in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine and is board certified in all three specialties.

Dr. Mims is active in national, state and community health organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, NC Pediatric Society and NC Medical Society and is a past President of the Buncombe County Medical Society Foundation. She serves on the boards for the YMCA of WNC, the Western Carolina Medical Society and Kids in Parks, a local obesity prevention initiative linked with the Blue Ridge Parkway. An active church member, she teaches Sunday School to grade school children. She and her husband have two teenage sons.
