Bariatric Surgery - Diana Fisher

"I literally thought I was dying," says Diana Fisher when she talks about life before bariatric surgery. Although in her early 40s and still fairly healthy, her life was a daily struggle with physical and emotional misery. "I was a walking time bomb," she says.

Today, Ms. Fisher is 172 pounds lighter. Her BMI (body mass index) dropped from 50 to 20-from the severely morbidly obese range to the low normal range. She glows with vitality, dresses with panache and turns heads. But even more important to her is how she feels.

"I can get out of bed and feel like my feet are not going to crack under me. I can work all day and still have energy," she says. "I had terrible asthma but now, except for seasonal problems, it's gone. The urinary incontinence is cleared up. I don't feel like I'm going to have a heart attack when I walk. It was totally, absolutely life-changing. It gave me my life back."

"Sometimes people say ‘you lose the weight and you gain a brain,' " she explains. "As big as obese people are, they are not seen. Their opinions are not heard. And actually, you don't want to be noticed. Now, my opinions count. I have confidence in myself."

Ms. Fisher's renewal led to a new job as well, as coordinator for Mission's Bariatric Surgery Program. She is honest with patients. "There are risks," she says. "And unless you change your eating habits and exercise regularly, you can gain the weight again. But if I had to have the surgery every year to be a normal weight, I would do it."
