Caring for a wound that won't heal is a difficult job. If not treated properly, seemingly minor wounds may get worse or infected and may lead to the loss of limbs through amputation and sometimes even death.
Many factors contribute to slow or difficult wound healing including chronic conditions such as vascular disease or diabetes. The causes of open wounds are sometimes very complex and challenging. A wound that will not heal needs more than just another dressing or band-aid, it needs the expertise of a professional wound care team.
At Mission Hospital's Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center, we have a team of physicians and clinicians who are specially trained to provide advanced wound care, education, and limb salvage.
We look at wound care as a team effort, working closely to develop a care plan, educating the patient and care-giver on caring for the wound at home, and acting as a support system to our patients and their families.

- Skin Grafts
- Growth Factor Therapies
- Wound debridement - removal of dead/unhealthy tissue
- Off-loading
- Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (wound vac)
- Total contact casting - a special cast used to redistribute plantar (sole of the foot) pressure to allow wound closure
- Unna boots - multi-layered compression dressings for the leg that help to decrease swelling and allow wound closure
- Dopplers
- Foot & Nail Care - for high risk patients (e.g., those with diabetes or vascular insufficiency) who need assistance with callous care or toenail cutting.
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - delivery of oxygen into the body in a pressurized chamber to promote healing, fight infection, and aid in the restoration of damaged tissue.
- Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitoring (TCOM)- Simple test to determine oxygen levels, wound healing potential, hyperbaric candidacy and amputation levels.
- Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) - cleanses the body's tissues.
- Wound, Ostomy and Continence Services- acute and rehabilitative care and education for people with disorders of the gastrointestinal system, genitourinary system and integumentary system.
- Surgical Intervention- Consults, deep tissue debridement, and surgical reconstruction of wounds of the entire body.
Wound Conditions Treated
We treat a variety of conditions from minor to complex cases, including:
- Diabetic foot ulcers / lower extremity leg ulcers
- Pressure ulcers/Decubitus
- Venous stasis ulcers
- Skin tears or lacerations
- Traumatic injuries
- Burns
- Radiation wounds / tissue damage
- Post surgical wounds / infections
- Spider bites (Brown Recluse)
- Slow or non-healing wounds
- Any wound or ulcer that has not shown signs of healing in 30 days

We provide our patients with some of the most advanced wound treatment options in Western North Carolina. The staff is committed to staying abreast of the literature, research and technology in order to provide comprehensive, high quality care to you and your loved ones.
This multi-disciplinary team includes physicians, certified physician assistants, certified wound care nurses, certified wound specialists, certified foot care nurses, certified hyperbaric physicians, certified wound ostomy continence nurses, certified lymphedema therapists, and certified nursing assistants.

Referrals to the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center can be made by your physician or you may directly to set up an appointment for yourself as a physician referral is not necessary. (All patients must have an open or draining wound as criteria to be seen in the Wound Healing Center).
